From artist residency at Terre Vivante Art Studio, Guardia Sanframondi, Campania region, Italy, 2016

Graphite on Fabriano paper, 11” x 10”

During a three-week residency in Guardia Sanframondi, a medieval hilltop village in the Campania region of Italy, Kavanagh explored language and translation, engaging with locals to inscribe phrases in English, Italian, and the local dialect of Guardiolo. Many older residents of the village spoke only Guardiolo, which is orally passed down across generations, remains largely unwritten, and is quickly fading from memory.
