Alberta Oil Sands Project focuses on oil sands development in the Athabasca region of Northern Canada, a site of global industry with broad economic and environmental implications.

In 2008 and 2011, Kavanagh visited Fort McMurray to conduct aerial filming of nearby oil sands extraction processes and related infrastructure including open pit mines, upgrading plants, tailings and land reclamation initiatives.
